Titled gentlemen are supposed to be perfect. Whether it be good looks, charm, or eloquent speech, everyone expects an earl to be refined in every way. And if the earl isn’t, he risks being shamed by the Ton. No one knows this better than Landon Tait, the Earl of Farewell, who’s been on the receiving end of the Ton’s gossip since he first made his appearance in London.

After the last Season, he vowed to stay as far from London as possible. But when his brother lands into serious trouble, he has no choice but to come to his aid. He tells himself he’ll make it quick. Just one evening, and his brother will be free from trouble. Then he can return to his country estate to enjoy his life of solitude.

Miss Opal Beaufort is attending a ball when she overhears the snickers about a certain gentleman who was born with a lisp. Several ladies sneak to a private room to listen to him, and something in Opal snaps. She can’t stand the idea of someone being made the laughingstock of the Ton. But as soon as she intervenes on his behalf, a scandal ensues, and she finds herself unwittingly betrothed to him.

Now, Landon isn’t only forced to stay in London to face the ridicule of the Ton, but he also must deal with a beautiful wife who might find him as imperfect as he fears.

I skimmed some of the later portions of this book as I like to finish what I start, but I don't recommend reading this story. It seemed simplistic at first, the heroine being shallow, weak, and not bright enough to keep out of a compromising situation. Later she loses confidence and fears confiding in others for help.

I loved this book! Opal and Landon were perfect for each other. Landon was so sweet and the perfect husband
flaws and all. This is so far my favorite in the series and I can not wait for the next one.
There is something very odd about this book. Usually I don't bother finishing a book if the writing is bad, but I liked the characters. But I would swear this book was written by a 12 yr old. The dialogue and prose is simplistic, and the historical details are all off. Even the one sex scene seemed childish. I can't recommend it.
This books is so good. They were so good for each other. First half focused on hero and thw growth he shows under heroine's care and eventual love. So cruel how he was treated because of his stuttering. Then it gets better when the suspense in the 2nd half of the book was a good added drama that allowed us to get to know heroine's own past demons and why the shunned hero was perfect for her. It's safe read. Beautiful romance. Some steam to the couples relationship. No OW/OM drama. Would highly recommend.
I'm one of those annoying people who 5 minutes into a book or movie, can tell you whodunit. But I'm consistently surprised by this author's books, as they often go in a different direction. That makes them much more enjoyable to a know-it-all like myself.
This first book in the 'Marriage By Fate' series is the sequel to 'The Earl's Wallflower Bride'. In that book, we meet Opal and find out about her background and family. In this new book, we continue the journey with Opal and find out what happens after scandal finds her. Who is Landon and why is he so shy?

I highly recommend this suspenseful & well-written novel and all three of the 'Marriage By Arrangement' books. I really enjoy this author's writing style and will also check out her other Regency series, 'Marriage By Bargain', 'Marriage By Scandal' and 'Marriage By Deceit'. The characters weave throughout all these series, so a "friend" from one book becomes the "star" of another book. For any reader that loves continuing series, these are the perfect choice and highly recommended.
Opal finds herself married to Landon, the Earl of Farewell, after being caught alone with him, to warn him about some girls who were making fun of him about his lisp. Because of his speech impediment, Landon is painfully shy. Opal tries to make him feel better about himself, while he worries if he’ll ever be worthy of her. Then there are strange things going on that make Opal think she is losing her mind, so there is some mystery thrown in.

Opal is a likable heroine, but almost too perfect. Landon is unlike almost every Regency romance hero. Not only is he the very opposite of a rake, but his shyness is a true affliction. When you think of a hero “hiding,” it’s more figurative - like going to “hide” in his study, not literally hiding in the attic or under the bed. Landon is more a person to be pitied.

There are some things in the story that just don’t match with the Regency era. Opal didn’t know that being in a room alone with a man would be considered a scandalous position. Her brother admits he never thought to warn her of this. That would be the FIRST thing he would warn her. Then, she’s not at all upset that she has no choice but to get married. At least Landon seems upset that it’s happening. She doesn’t know him at all, but happily accepts that she will now marry him. It just doesn’t fit with human nature, even when someone is as kind as Opal. She was not prepared in the least for her wedding night, because her sister-in-law was embarrassed to give her any advice, yet the entire family spoke openly of her conceiving. It just didn’t seem like a conversation that would have happened in the society of the time.

Despite these discrepancies, it was a nice read.
As a general rule, I always finish a book once I start it, even if I consider it not so great. But I made an exception with this book. A grown man running and hiding in the attic like a child?? Same grown man hiding under his bed from his new wife because he's afraid to consummate the wedding?? And not only hiding under his bed, but hiding his eyes as though that'll keep him from being seen?? Really? I mean REALLY? The attic scene almost did me in, but the hiding under the bed totally did me in. The book reading ended for me right there.
I skimmed some of the later portions of this book as I like to finish what I start, but I don't recommend reading this story. It seemed simplistic at first, the heroine being shallow, weak, and not bright enough to keep out of a compromising situation. Later she loses confidence and fears confiding in others for help.
